gas prices

as frijolita and i are in the new car market, and of course the price of benzine (as my dad used to call it) is foremost in our minds. in our area, the cost is about $2.60 per gallon wherever you look.

and this seems outrageously expensive to us. but i stumbled across this graph today and it really changed my way of thinking ...

the start date is 1979; the black line = actual price, and the darker gray line = price adjusted for inflation.

so bring on the H3!

A couple of my favorite comebacks when I'm out in public and I hear someone parrot this statistic without being able to explain what it actually means (note that I said "comebacks" and not "serious arguments"):

"Where can I get some of those inflation-adjusted dollars? My boss keeps on paying me with the regular ones." (I said it with big grin on my face, and Cletus STILL looked at me like I was speaking Mandarin.)

"So it's OK that we're sending 50% more money to the terrorist-loving Saudi oil barons, because they can't get as much Jihad per dollar as they could in 1979?"

"Ooooh! Late '70s economic conditions! Those were my favorites!"

And the one I'm saving up to use with a really obnoxious know-it-all: "I didn't buy any gas in 1979. Am I allowed to have an opinion now?"

Let the prices soar. They're finally getting to the point where alternatives are getting attractive.

Regular unleaded is within a dime of $3 in the north 'burbs, BTW.
