2. pooping has become quite the obsession for me. seems like trotter p won't "go" in the morning until he's eaten about four bites of kibble, and then waited for his father to run in the house to do something. then he (trotter p) does his thing, and keeps on eating.
i can't get him to go first thing in the morning -- we pee and then want to play. i stay outside with him for 10 minutes, and after the initial crouch (and there's nothing cuter than a puppy squatting to pee with his favorite toy du jour in his mouth) it's playtime. and the funny thing is, i know he has to poop, because he does this thing -- i hear it's close to what toddlers do when they're tired but don't want to go to sleep -- wherein he jumps into overdrive and just runs spasmodically through the yard.
he knows he has to poop. i know he has to poop. and yet, he waits until he gets in the garage and eats a bite or two.
i'm not angry at him -- accidents, the "dummies' guide to raising a puppy" tells me, are more a fault of the owners' inability to pay sufficient attention to the dog. which is fine; i'll take the blame. but i'm just pissed off that i can't seem to find that trick that will get trotter p to (as the books put it) "eliminate" on my schedule.

about the finer points of pooping on command.

Maybe take a few bits of kibble out with you in the yard? After he romps around, give him some kibble and see if it creates the same response. You could also have a small treat other than kibble waiting once he does his business.
I feel your pain though. I recently acquired a 5 year old dog who is really a cutey but getting him to poop when I want is very frustrating.
....and now I feel very weird and nauseous inside talking about puppy bm's.
you know, that's a great idea. i never thought of that!
i think i'm going to try it tomorrow morning. i don't exactly mind that he poops in the garage -- at least it's not hin the house, and i know i'm not timing things correctly -- but i need to nip this in the bud.
and yeah, i feel kind of odd talking about bm's and puppies ... but like any good parent, i'm saying things like "good potty!!!" a bit too loud around other people. :)
It seems so long ago we trained our dog to poop almost on command. We would use a word "potty potty" and if she went, gave her a treat. Or something like that. Now she much older and just knows it business time. I wish potty training my daughter was just as easy, but it could be worse from what I hear from other parents. If you want to read some of our adventures check out our blog... recently it isn't for the weak stomached.
I could be wrong, but I thought that I read one time that humans and animals release some type of chemical that makes them "go" a few minutes after eating. Could that be it?

First are you crate training your "bundle of joy"? That is the key to getting the little guy on track. Also, when he does peep or poop where you want him to- give him a really special treat like a tiny piece of boiled chicken. Make it the BEST treat that he only gets when he does what he is supposed to do. My dog will go out and do his business and will run over to me to get his treat!
